SUZANNE LANCHBURY
BA Hons Ceramics, Camberwell College of Arts, London.
Suzanne Lanchbury is a ceramic artist who creates a deeply personal world of figurative sculptures. The expression of the characters portrayed celebrates the form and tactile nature of the clay. Each piece is hand built from stoneware paperclay. The surface is layered with slips, stains, oxides, glazes and painted form.
Suzanne can usually be found working on several pieces alongside each other, sometimes consciously on a theme but just as likely intuitively creating. The ideas flow between the work and are constantly evolving and informing each other. Her characters externalise her inner exploration. Hybrid creatures allow both narrative and a darker side to show through. She often only gains further insight into their meaning after the work is complete.
Suzanne works from her studio in rural West Wales. Hers is a landscape of storytellers and daydreamers, often in disguise. Whether curious, soulful or playful, her figures portray emotion and invite you to wonder at the world they inhabit.
